How to Ask for Work Experience in the UK | Speculative Applications | Business English

Updated: Jun 3, 2019

I suggest that you think about this one carefully. Once you have selected organisations you would like to contact, please consider below tips and draft example speculative email.

Speculative emails mean that you are contacting organisations and enquiring about job opportunities/work experience that are actually not advertised. You are approaching them directly and taking an interest in working for them.

4 Tips to Consider:

1. Make sure that your email is not too long with too much detail. There is no need for them to know your full history and background.

2. As you are not applying for a specific job advert, make sure you are clear with your ask and what you hope to achieve. Your email needs to be short, concise and easily understood.

3. Think about the size of the organisation, industry, research about what they do, their customers and purpose, and put yourself in their situation and anticipate what they may be looking for

4. Do not forget to attach your CV to your speculative email

Example email (please amend further if you decide to use this one and tailor it relevant organisations):

Subject line: Work experience - speculative application

Dear Sir/Madam*

*(if you do not know their full name, if you know their name then use Mr/Mrs/Ms [plus their last name]; also if the name is not on their website, then you may wish to ring the relevant office to find out who you can send your email too! Do not be put off by this, your intentions and endeavours will pay off in the longer run!)

I write to enquire about the possibility of a work experience, unpaid/or paid at your organisation. I am a [law graduate/ financial graduate/experienced in retail/customer services etc] gained in [insert your home country]. I am now looking to develop further in the UK and also contribute and add value to your organisation. [you may wish to put a few lines about what they do and why it matters to you as most organisations in the UK want to ensure that their values are aligned to people who want to work for them].

I am a [quick, positive and self motivated person with real passion for work/strong work ethics/I possess great customer service and time management skills]

I attach my CV for your consideration where you can see my full skill set and experience to date.

I would be grateful if you could consider my speculative application.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

[insert your full name and ideally a telephone number under your name and email address]
